Man arrested in connection to September Green Street shooting

By Gillian Dunlop, Staff Writer

Kejuan Carter was arrested Tuesday morning with a warrant for aggravated battery in connection with the Green Street shooting that took place on Sept. 25, 2016.

Carter was arrested in the 3700 block of Colleen Drive in Champaign. He was asked to step outside of the building and surrender and complied, Champaign Sgt. Dave Griffet said.

“A subject was battered. He was struck, kicked and stepped on by nine different individuals who we have identified based on a cell phone video,” Griffet said of the event that took place on the night of Sept. 25.

“The person was knocked unconscious, provided medical care. That incident was prior to the allegation that Robbie Patton shows up with a handgun that ultimately killed George Korchev.”

Korchev was an innocent bystander passing the scene when the gun was fired.

One person of the nine connected with the beating is still at large. Champaign police have identified him as Korrion Taylor.

Carter appeared in court today where he was informed of his charges and appointed a public defender unless he chose to bring in his own counsel.

A preliminary hearing will be scheduled in a week or two.

“An officer (will be) called at court to testify and establish probable cause to show Kejuan Carter had participated (in the event that led to his arrest),” Griffet said.

Patton will continue his trial in court on March 14. He is currently charged with three counts of first degree murder and three counts of aggravated battery with a firearm.
