Suspect in overnight shooting surrenders

By Samantha Boyle, News Editor

The 15-year-old suspect in recent overnight shootings surrendered to Champaign County Juvenile Detention Services Tuesday at around 4:40 a.m., according to a Champaign Police press release.

According to reports, police responded to the residence in the 1600 block of Hedge Road around 1:30 a.m. on May 11, where a 14-year-old with life threatening injuries was found. The preliminary investigations revealed the suspect accidentally discharged the firearm inside the home, which fatally wounded the 14-year-old and caused non-life-threatening injuries to a 17-year-old.

Before the suspect surrendered, the Champaign County State’s Attorney filed a petition in juvenile court on May 16 on the charges of involuntary manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon.

However, even though these charges have been filed, this is still an active investigation.

Anyone with information is encouraged to call Champaign Police at (217) 351-4545 or submit an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers at (217) 373-8477.
