Gun incidents reported in Champaign over Halloween weekend

Over the weekend, three gun-related crimes were reported in Champaign. This comes after increased attention on gun violence in the community in the last few months.

A homicide was reported on Holly Hill Drive around 4 p.m. on Saturday. According to the press release, police responded to a report of shots fired. A group of people were gathered near an abandoned building and gunfire began in the backyard.

Police arrived at the scene and found the victim inside the residence with a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital where he died due to his injuries. The investigation is ongoing. 

On Sunday around midnight, a homicide was reported on West Bradley Avenue. According to the press release, police responded to a shooting involving injuries. 

There was a gathering in the parking lot of an apartment complex before the shooting, the press release stated. Upon arrival, police saw vehicles and individuals fleeing the scene.

They found a 20-year-old victim with five gunshot wounds, who was transported to a local hospital where he died due to his injuries. Police have recovered 20 shell casings from the scene and the investigation is ongoing. 

On Sunday around midnight, an armed robbery was reported at the Family Dollar store on North Market Street. According to the press release, an unknown offender waved a handgun while demanding cash. The offender collected an undisclosed sum of currency and left. No injuries were reported and the investigation is ongoing.
