At least 20 injured, 1 killed in Willowbrook mass shooting

One person has been killed and at least 20 people have been injured during a Juneteenth celebration in a southwest suburb of Chicago last night.

A group of people in Willowbrook, Illinois were celebrating the holiday in the parking lot of a strip mall just off of Illinois Route 83 when gunfire broke out.

DuPage County police said that the shooting was reported around 12:30 a.m. this morning.

According to the DuPage County Sheriff, at least 20 people suffered injuries from gunshot wounds. 

The sheriff said that at least 10 people were transported to nearby hospitals, while many other victims transported themselves.

NBC Chicago reported that at least seven people who were injured in the shooting have since been treated and released from the hospital.

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the shooting. At this time, it is unclear if the shooter was only one person or multiple.

Police have additionally reported that a motive for the shooting is still uncertain.

According to the Gun Violence Archive, there have now been 310 mass shootings in the United States in 2023. The death from the Willowbrook shooting is one of almost 20,000.
