At 4:14 a.m. on Wednesday, a Campus Safety Notice was sent out by Police Chief Alice Cary, stating that an incident of theft occurred at 11:45 p.m. on Tuesday in Urbana.
According to the report, a man reported that he had been “struck from behind with a tree branch” with three other men present. The victim’s backpack was stolen from him and the offenders fled the scene on public transportation.
The report also noted that the victim, who was not an Illinois student, knew one of the offenders. The victim refused medical treatment after the incident.
The notice did not specify or include any arrests made for the theft and assault. It encouraged anyone with information about the incident to contact the University Police at 217-333-1216. Anonymous tips can be sent in by calling Champaign County Crime Stoppers at 217-373-8477 (373-TIPS).
