Altercation escalates to shooting at Third, Green streets

At 4:20 a.m. on Sunday, police responded to 911 calls of shots fired on the 600 block of South Third Street near Third and Green streets, according to a statement from Interim University Police Chief Matt Ballinger.

The calls indicated that multiple shots had been fired outside a large house party where two men were involved in an altercation. The incident “escalated into both producing firearms and attempting to shoot each other,” according to Interim Chief Ballinger’s statement.

One bystander, a University student who was not involved in the altercation, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital by ambulance.

At 5:21 a.m., an Illini-Alert stated there was no ongoing threat in the area; however, police are still investigating the scene and the identities of the suspects are unknown.

Police are encouraging people to use their Evidence Submission Portal for sharing photo or video evidence.
