Julia R. Rietz elected as State’s Attorney

Democratic candidate Julia R. Rietz was elected as the Champaign County State’s Attorney. Rietz ran unopposed for the State’s Attorney position, gaining 100% of the votes during the 2024 general election.

Rietz, who graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law in 1993, has served as the Champaign County State’s Attorney since 2004. She is now entering her sixth official term in office. 

The office of the Champaign County State’s Attorney defines its official duties as prosecuting “all criminal and traffic cases in the Circuit Court and initiating all dependency, neglect, abuse and delinquency juvenile petitions and proceedings.”

Rietz began her legal career as a prosecutor in the State’s Attorney’s Office, focusing on cases of child abuse and neglect. As a State’s Attorney, Rietz will work with criminal and civil cases for her upcoming four-year term.

Carol Ammons elected as District 103 representative

Democratic candidate Carol Ammons was elected as the representative of District 103 in the Illinois House of Representatives. 

Ammons ran unopposed in the 2024 general election, holding on to her seat. She first assumed office in 2015 and has represented Illinois’ District 103 since then. District 103 includes Champaign, Urbana and Staley. 

Ammons has worked at the county, city and state level throughout her career and is the first Black representative of District 103 in the Illinois House of Representatives.

As a state representative, Ammons has passed 38 bills in the general assembly and resolved several unemployment and housing cases, among other achievements. As a full-time legislator representing constituents on various issues including education, ethics and pensions, Ammons hopes to continue to “bridge the gap between activism and lawmaking.”

Susan W. McGrath elected as Circuit Clerk

Democratic candidate Susan W. McGrath was elected as the Champaign County Circuit Clerk. McGrath ran unopposed in the 2024 general election, gaining 100% of the votes. 

McGrath was first elected to the Champaign County Circuit Clerk position in November 2020. Her successful reelection in 2024 cements her second term as Circuit Clerk, continuing to support the office’s mission to provide “services to both the public and to Courthouse Officials.”

McGrath graduated from the University of Illinois with a bachelor’s degree in political science and a Juris Doctor from the Illinois College of Law. Having lived in Champaign County since 1976, she has served on many county boards, including working with healthcare, women’s businesses and the Bar Association.
