The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District issued a statement on July 21 urging residents to protect themselves from heat-related illness this week, as heat index values could reach between 105 and 112 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures are expected to be highest today and continue into the weekend with little overnight relief.
The press release reminds people to seek relief if experiencing high body temperature, hot and dry skin, nausea, dizziness or headaches due to heat exposure, and to take preventative action.
A network of partners including CUPHD, Cunningham Township, the Salvation Army of Champaign, Friend in Me and others have opened a temporary 24-hour emergency shelter for adults experiencing homelessness through Saturday.
