As Labor Day quickly approaches, the Champaign Police Department is joining forces with the Illinois Department of Transportation, state police and other local law enforcement organizations to increase driving enforcement.
From Aug. 15 to Sept. 2, law enforcement plans to increase patrols that will specifically focus on impaired driving and traffic violations. CPD will also be looking for distracted driving, lack of seatbelts and other road violations.
The department encourages people to always take a sober ride home from events, either through a designated driver, rideshare or other arrangements.
“Champaign Police work proactively to ensure the safety of every driver, cyclist, and pedestrian in or near our community’s roadways,” said Police Chief Timothy T. Tyler in a press release on August 14. “Drivers are reminded that it is never acceptable to drive impaired, and we must all do our part to ensure everyone gets home safely.”
Those found driving impaired or violating rules of the road will be issued citations or written warnings, depending on circumstances.
