The American Red Cross is warning of a potential blood shortage this winter and urges donors to make appointments to give blood or platelets to help prevent disruptions in lifesaving care.
Over the holiday season, winter weather and busy schedules limited donations, according to a press release from the Red Cross’ Illinois chapter. Now, it emphasizes that donors with O, A negative and B negative blood types are especially needed.
As part of National Blood Donor Month, individuals who donate blood between Jan. 1 and Jan. 25 will be automatically entered for a chance to win a Super Bowl LX giveaway, including tickets and travel accommodations.

The Red Cross has also partnered with Philadelphia Eagles running back and Super Bowl champion Saquon Barkley to promote blood donation during the winter months.
Those interested in donating blood in the Champaign-Urbana area can do so Friday from 1-5 p.m. at Urbana Rising Hope Church. Blood can also be donated on Jan. 23 and Jan. 29 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Illini Union. Appointments can be made at the Red Cross’ blood donation website.
