A new Qdoba location is under construction at 711 S. Wright St.

Mexican-style fast-food chain Qdoba is set to join Campustown’s array of popular restaurants, with plans to open a location directly across from Alma Mater, at 711 S. Wright St.

A building permit was issued by the Building Safety Division of Champaign Fire Department on March 29. Qdoba’s corporate headquarters has yet to respond with an opening date for the new addition.

“I think it’s pretty good. I love the flavor of the seasoning,” Jessica Murillo, senior in LAS, said. “I really like it and I feel like it’s a little bit more on the authentic side when it comes to Mexican fast food.”

With over 750 locations, Qdoba provides a wide range of Mexican-style fast food and is known for its customizable entrees, which include burritos, tacos and bowls. Customers then choose from various toppings to make their meals more personalized. Qdoba also operates a rewards program that enables customers to collect points on their purchases.

“When (Qdoba) comes to campus, I would for sure try it,” Riley Milbrandt, sophomore in Education, said. “I love trying new places, especially places I’ve heard of but never got around to.”

In 2014, Qdoba opened a location on the lower level of the Illini Union, however, it has since closed. Maize Mexican Grill now occupies the restaurant’s former space. When asked his thoughts on Qdoba returning to campus, Diegra Loimi, sophomore in LAS, said, “It’s exciting to have another new restaurant open. It will be someone new for us to explore.”

“Having (Qdoba) in town would be great, and it would add another option for food. So, I would definitely be open to trying it,” Loimi said.
