UIPD is continuing to investigate reports of an armed suspect near The Red Lion early Tuesday, though no firearm was recovered and police said the suspect was believed to have left the area.
Officers were outside the bar at around 12:11 a.m. when a security manager reported a disturbance involving an individual who may have been armed, according to a UIPD press release. The report prompted an Illini-Alert as officers searched the area, including the Towers at Third parking garage where the suspect was last seen.
Police stopped and searched two men involved in the altercation but did not find any weapons. Victims who initially said they believed the suspect was armed later clarified they had not seen a firearm but thought the suspect’s actions implied one.
UIPD issued the all-clear Illini-Alert just before 1 a.m., telling the campus community it was safe to resume normal activity.
The investigation remains ongoing. UIPD said it is reviewing security camera footage and asked anyone with information to contact police at 217-333-1216 or reach out anonymously to Champaign County Crime Stoppers.
