‘The Price is Right Live!’ comes to Champaign in October

By Jude Panlilio, Contributing Writer

“The Price is Right Live!” will be coming to the State Farm Center on Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. The announcement came from the State Farm Center along with tickets to the event.

“The Price is Right Live!,” which is a spin-off on the TV show of the same name, will be offering potential contestant registration completely free of charge, according to State Farm Center.

This registration will open to everyone the afternoon before the event. Only legal U.S. residents 18 years or older are eligible to participate.

If you purchase a ticket to attend the show as an audience member, your chances of being selected are not increased — all contestants are chosen randomly, and anyone with or without a ticket can be a contestant.

If a winning contestant did not purchase an audience ticket, they will be given one for free.

It will not be televised but will include all of the same games and prizes fans have become accustomed to seeing on the TV show,” said Brad Swanson, assistant director of the State Farm Center. “This show was scheduled to visit State Farm Center back in the spring of 2020 but was canceled due to COVID-19. We are excited for the opportunity to bring it back!”

The game show is known to be a staple American pastime for many families, with students across campus expressing simultaneous excitement and nostalgia for a show they grew up on alongside their relatives.

“My grandma would watch it on TV and she would get (all the game answers) right, because she just shops a lot,” said Emma Mann, sophomore in Social Work. “So that just brings me back to childhood memories with her … I’d definitely go.”

Others did not find the event riveting enough to buy tickets, especially if they had not grown up with the show as others had.

“Why aren’t they playing Family Feud?” said Owusu Ansong, sophomore in LAS. “I don’t even know how to play The Price is Right … I wouldn’t buy tickets.”

“The Price is Right” is America’s longest-running game show and has given away more than $12 million in cash and prizes since its inception in 1972. The show recently celebrated its 50th anniversary on Sept. 30, 2021.

Tickets for the upcoming event are now available to purchase at the State Farm Center website.
