The first human case of West Nile Virus in Champaign County was confirmed earlier this month.
The affected person, who is in their 60s, resides in Champaign, according to reports by the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District.
Even as fall approaches, mosquitoes remain active until the first hard freeze, says CUPHD Administrator Julie A. Pryde.
The virus predominantly spreads to humans through the Culex mosquito from infected birds. About one in five infected will experience manageable symptoms like fever, aches, rash or nausea. In rare accounts, brain infections like meningitis or encephalitis, paralysis or even death can occur, according to the CDC.
Currently, there are no vaccines or medicines to prevent West Nile Virus; however, the CUPHD shares several preventative actions. Reporting and reducing long-standing water, limiting mosquito entry into your home and wearing protective spray and clothing can greatly diminish your chances of contracting the disease.
