The Champaign Police Department, in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, the Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies, is ramping up its traffic enforcement efforts from Nov. 21 to Dec. 2.
CPD, in a press release, encouraged sober driving and the use of seatbelts in vehicles during holiday travel.
“The holidays are a time of family and friendship, and Champaign Police want everyone to get home safely,” wrote CPD Chief Timothy T. Tyler. “We’re asking all residents to celebrate responsibly and plan ahead to ensure we all have a happy holiday season and a prosperous new year.”
The press release included several tips for safe travel during the holidays, such as designating a sober driver and not letting friends or family drive while impaired. Alternatively, CPD suggested using other safe means to get home, like taxis, public transit or ride-hailing services.
CPD also emphasized wearing seatbelts and promptly reporting impaired drivers on the road by calling 911.

Those found to be impaired, unbuckled or violating other traffic laws will be issued citations and written warnings, when appropriate, according to the release. In Champaign, CPD’s efforts to address these concerns will focus on arterial routes — interstates, freeways and main roads.
The traffic safety campaign is funded with federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
