University alum Vince Gustafson was officially named the City of Urbana’s public works director on Monday during a mayoral appointment meeting with the Urbana City Council.
Prior to the meeting, Gustafson was serving as the interim public works director after Tim Cowan resigned from the position early.
Cowan was set to serve as public works director until June 2027, but left the department in June 2025, with Gustafson taking over the position.
In a press release from the City of Urbana, Mayor DeShawn Williams extended his support to Gustafson, stating his appreciation for Gustafson’s openness to change and willingness to bridge gaps at Urbana Public Works.
After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in forestry in 1999, Gustafson first began serving the city in 2004 as a building maintenance worker. He has since held the roles of facilities supervisor, public facilities manager and deputy Public Works director for operations.
