A Champaign man stabbed two firefighters and a paramedic Thursday night while they were responding to a 911 call near Neil Street and Buena Vista Drive, according to a press release from the Champaign Police Department.
At 9:40 p.m., first responders from the Champaign Fire Department and Carle Arrow Ambulance arrived to help an individual experiencing a mental health crisis. By 9:52 p.m., crews radioed an urgent call for help, reporting an active stabbing.
Officers rushed to the scene and found two firefighters and a paramedic with serious stab wounds. They detained the suspect, identified as 23-year-old Trevor Lewis, and secured the area.
Emergency medical personnel treated the three injured first responders in the field before transporting them to a hospital. Police said the two firefighters remain in serious but stable condition, while the EMT received treatment and was released.
CPD arrested Lewis after he received treatment for a hand laceration. He faces preliminary charges of three counts of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated battery and one count of resisting arrest.
