The Daily Illini spoke to Robert Stengel, a community member and street performer, on Friday night. Stengel said he witnessed a group near the area prior to the shooting.
“There’s a whole group of people hanging out (in the area) like there is every weekend,” Stengel said. “Two of the guys are getting rowdy, and they say, ‘Let’s go toe to toe.’”
Stengel kept walking and heard gunshots soon after.
Ballinger wrote that a suspect had not yet been located.
According to the update, “all parties involved are not believed to be affiliated with the University,” and the victim was taken to Carle Hospital for treatment.
