Champaign Police responded to two overnight shooting incidents this weekend.

Police were on the scene in the 1100 block of North James Street due to reports of gunfire at around 10 p.m. Friday.

According to a City of Champaign press release, a 26-year-old male with non-life-threatening injuries was driven to the hospital by a private vehicle. Champaign Police are still processing information and evidence to investigate events leading up to the shooting.

Although the investigation is still in its beginning stages, the current evidence suggests that this was not a random act. However, no suspect information is available and no arrests have been made at this time.

Around 1:30 a.m. Saturday, police responded to a residence in the 1600 block of Hedge Road. According to the press release, upon arrival, officers found a 14-year-old male with “life-threatening injuries from an apparent gunshot wound.” The 14-year-old later succumbed to his injuries.

Later that same morning, a second victim, a 17-year-old male was found sustaining non-life-threatening injuries from the shooting. The 17-year-old was treated and released from a local hospital.

Current evidence suggests the two incidents on Friday and Saturday are not related.

“Future updates may be provided as they become available,” the press release said.
