An Urbana man has been taken into custody as the suspect of a shooting Wednesday afternoon on the north side of Champaign. Police identified the suspect as Tarrell Lamont Boatman, 20.
Champaign Police were investigating reports of possible gunshots fired Tuesday in the 400 block of W. Maple St. when they overheard gunshots from North Elm St. around 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Boatman was taken into custody by police following a chase on foot. Police later recovered the weapon along the path Boatman ran.
Lt. Tod Myers, North District Commander of the Champaign police department, said he is currently unsure regarding larger involvement or motive suspected regarding the shooting.
“We have one person in custody and charged with the crime,” Myers said. “At this point, we don’t know (if there was larger involvement) for sure.”
Nearby Franklin Middle School was in lockdown for approximately 10 minutes for “strictly precautionary reasons.”
The children were released following the lockdown around the end of the regular school day.
An unidentified victim was transported to Carle Foundation Hospital in Urbana by ambulance to receive treatment. Police reported that the victim sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his lower body, but could not provide information on the victim’s condition or identity at the time.
