Chabad menorah knocked over, UIPD seek public help

By Daily Illini Staff Report

The University police department asked for the public’s help on Wednesday after a man was recorded knocking over the menorah displayed outside the Chabad Jewish Center at 509 S. Fourth St., Champaign.

In the security camera footage, the man approached the menorah around 6 a.m. Wednesday. He pushes the menorah until it breaks at its base and falls to the ground, then walks out of the frame. Moments later, the man walks back into the frame with two other men, passing the center.

The estimated damage to the menorah is about $2,269 due to it breaking at the base. The menorah was recently replaced after it was knocked over by vandals in the spring.

The department posted the video on its website Wednesday, and asked anyone who recognizes the offender or who has information about the incident to call (217) 333-1216. Information can also be reported anonymously by calling Crime Stoppers at 373-TIPS (8477) or at www.373tips.com.
