Man charged with felony for menorah vandalism

Max W. Kristy, 20, who was arrested on Aug. 25 on the charge of criminal damage to property for damaging a menorah outside of the University’s Chabad Jewish Center, was charged with a Class 4 felony Tuesday.

Kristy, a 20 year-old Parkland College student, was originally arrested after Champaign Police received an anonymous tip that identified Kristy as the man who knocked over the menorah outside the center, 509 S. Fourth St., in a surveillance video that from the center. The offense occurred around 6 a.m. Aug. 19.

The damage caused to the menorah was estimated at $2,269. Kristy broke the metal structure at the base, which is set in concrete, causing damage to electrical wiring housed inside of the structure.

Kristy and members of the Champaign Police Department could not be immediately reached for comment.
