Letter: Time to end Chief

By The Daily Illini

I watch with interest as articles appear in the DI first about protests against the Chief and then about his praises.

My own opinion is that the time for an end to racial and ethnic mascots has come. If we are using a symbol for ourselves that is really that of a minority group, then it treads against their sensitivities unnecessarily.

It would be as if we were to call ourselves the Flying Stukels, placing the image of University president Dr. James Stukel’s grandmother on our sleeves. The practice would be quickly squelched.

There is tremendous low quality atop our doctoral colleges, made worse by overpayment.
