Women’s basketball to hold try-outs

By Derek Barichello

The women’s basketball team, lead by head coach Theresa Grentz, will be holding a walk-on tryout on Monday, October 17 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ubben Basketball Complex at 1750 S. Fourth Street in Champaign.

Players from all positions are welcome to try out, said assistant coach Stacie Terry. The coaching staff will be looking for any player who could help out the team, she said.

“We are just holding an open forum for players to come and showcase their talents,” Terry said. “We’re not looking for anything specifically.”

Student who are interested in trying out for the team must be on time and bring proof of insurance.

In order to be eligible for tryouts, candidates must be full-time University students that have not used up their college eligibility at another institution.

The women’s basketball team will also be joining the men’s team for the Midnight Madness festivities at Assembly Hall on Friday. Doors open at 9 p.m. with the events starting approximately a half-hour later. The event will include introductions and scrimmages from both teams.

The Illini will return three starters; senior guard Maggie Acuna (who finished last season sixth in the league in steals), sophomore forward Danyel Crutcher (who was named to the All-Freshman team last season) and junior forward Erin Wigley (who spent her summer playing for the Big Ten team in Europe) to a team that advanced to the WNIT last season, finishing with a record of 17-12. Returning from last year’s squad as well are senior guard Janelle Hughes, senior forward Brittney Daugherty and junior forward and defensive specialist Audrey Tabon.

Along with a strong core of Illini returning to the team, they welcome one of the nation’s Top 25 recruiting classes to help them advance to their ninth postseason appearance of the last 10 seasons.
