Illinois junior second baseman Ryan Hastings and senior outfielder Ryan Snowden were named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 5 first team on Thursday.

The Mattoon, Ill., natives were honored for their outstanding work in the classroom and now advance to the Academic All-America voting, which begins on May 15. Snowden and Hastings became eligible for academic honors after cumulating over a 3.2 GPA and being a starter on the team.

Although Hastings is a junior on the field because of a medical redshirt his freshman year, he has a 3.46 GPA and will be graduating on Saturday with a degree in sport management. Snowden owns a 3.39 GPA in community health and will also be graduating Saturday.

Both players have excelled on the field as much has they have in the classroom this season. Hastings currently is hitting .355 with six home runs, 29 RBI and 34 runs and Snowden’s .356 batting average ranks third on the team and his 25-game hitting streak earlier this season broke a school record.
