Soccer team beats No. 9 Florida

By Steve Contorno

The Illinois soccer team defeated No. 9 Florida 1-0 in front of the second largest home crowd in the program’s history.

Over 1,200 fans were in attendance to witness the Illini (3-2-0) pound the Gators (3-2-0) for 84 minutes and then finally put a goal on the board when forward Ella Masar scored on a breakaway to give Illinois the deciding goal.

It was Masar’s fourth goal in five games and her ninth point on the season.

Illinois consistently worked in the offensive third, but Gator goalkeeper Katie Fraine continually kept the ball out of the back of the net – until Masar’s goal.

The win moves the Illini above .500 for the first time this season and gives the team its first win over a ranked opponent in 2007.
