Soccer scores six goals in rout of Iowa

By Steve Contorno

Illinois broke out of its scoring slump and posted six goals to defeat the Iowa Hawkeyes at home Sunday.

With the win, the Illini evened their record in the Big Ten to 2-2 and improved to 7-4-0 on the season.

Freshman Cory Steigerwald opened the scoring for the Illini with a diving header in the box to tally her first goal of the season. Steigerwald went on to score the third goal for the Illini in the second half.

Iowa (6-2-4, 1-2 Big Ten), a very defensive-minded opponent, had difficulty solving the Illini attack. And the Hawkeyes had trouble creating an attack of their own, only testing Illinois goalkeeper Lindsey Carstens twice.

Senior Ella Masar added her sixth goal of the season in the 56th minute. Sophomore Courtney Bell scored the final two goals for the Illini, her first and second on the year.
