Hockey wins in 11th round of shootout

By Wes Anderson

Joey Resch scored the game-winning goal in the 11th round of a sudden death shootout as the Illinois Hockey club beat Ohio 2-1 in front of a massive crowd at the Ice Arena.

Early, the Illini appeared to be cruising to a sweep, with Tim Gilbert scoring just over two minutes into the first period. A shorthanded goal from Ohio’s Jeff Jepson, however, would tie the game midway through the second period.

Neither team found the net for the remainder of regulation, forcing a sudden-death overtime period which also went goalless.

A best-of-five shootout was then played, with the Illini falling behind 0-2 early. Mike Burda made two crucial saves and the Illini scored two must-make goals to force a sudden death shootout. In the 11th round, Joey Resch put the decisive goal past Paul Marshall, clearing the Illini bench in celebration as the crowd erupted.
