Women’s basketball earns WNIT bid

By Meghan Montemurro

It’s not over yet.

Following an improbable run to the Big Ten Tournament final as a No. 9 seed, the Illinois women’s basketball team has earned a bid to the 2008 Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) and a first-round bye, extending their season.

It marks the 11th time out of the past 12 seasons that the Illini (19-14) have played in the postseason. Illinois has played in the WNIT each of the last four years. In the WNIT, the Orange and Blue are 4-5 overall.

Illinois is one of five Big Ten schools – Michigan State, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin – to earn a WNIT bid.

The Illini will face off against the winner of Drake/UW-Green Bay on Monday night at 7 p.m. (CT) at Assembly Hall.
