Outfielder McMurray earns Freshman All-America honors

Illinois hitters continue to get recognition despite their season ending several weeks ago. Left fielder Casey McMurray was named a Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American by Collegiate American on Thursday.

In his first year with the Illini, McMurray tied for tops on the team with 12 doubles and batted an impressive .331 while starting all but eight games. He also tallied 28 runs and 24 RBIs, while batting in the lower third of the Illini batting order. His 54 hits ranks 10th on Illinois’ freshman hit list.

McMurray was also honored earlier this season as Big Ten Player of the Week on April 28 after putting up an 11-for-15 weekend against Penn State. He joins fellow Big Ten freshmen Eric Jokisch of Northwestern and Dean Wolosiansky of Ohio State on Collegiate America’s list.

For the summer, McMurray will be playing in the California Collegiate League with Santa Barbara Foresters and will see his first action in the team’s opener Saturday.
