Volleyball dismisses pesky Aggies at State Farm Illini Classic

By Anthony Zilis

Action at this year’s State Farm Illini Classic continued Saturday morning, as Illinois built a 20-12 lead in the first set against New Mexico State, only to see the Aggies storm back with a 14-4 run and take the set.

But the Illini showed great resolve in handily winning the second set, and winning a tight third, taking control of the match and ultimately winning, 24-26, 25-21, 25-19, 25-14.

The second set looked as if it might go the same way as the first, with the No. 23 Aggies making a 5-2 run to make the game 24-21 before the Illini closed out the set.

No team lead by more than two points in the third set until the Illini sealed the deal with a 9-2 run.

Laura Debruler once again led the team with 20 kills, and also tallied 11 digs. Hillary Haen led the Illini with 23 assists, and Ashley Edinger had 20 digs.
