The younger players got the best of the older ones in A Night of Legends on Saturday. In what was more of a commemorative ceremony than a competitive basketball game, four of the starting five from the 2005 Final Four team led the Blue Team to an 84-70 victory over the White team, led by the starting five from the 1989 “Flyin’ Illini.”

U.S. Olympic gold medalist Deron Williams led all scorers with 19 points at Assembly Hall. Williams and USA Basketball director Jerry Colangelo were honored at halftime for their contributions to the U.S. gold medal-finish at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Luther Head added 11 points, most on alley-oop dunks, and Roger Powell finished with 11 points.

Longtime NBA players Nick Anderson and Kendall Gill led the White team with 14 and 13 points, respectively. The White were coached by former Illinois coach Lou Henson, while former assistant Jimmy Collins headed the Blue.

Illinois honored 30 former players by hanging their jerseys from the Assembly Hall rafters. Attendance at the game reached 15,417.
