The Illini’s Amanda McGrory thought she won the bronze medal in the 5,000m race on Wednesday at the Paralympic Games in Beijing, China. However, due to a tragic crash in the middle of the race, officials disqualified the results and athletes were told they would have to race again. And the re-run could not have gone any better for McGrory on Friday, as she came out with a gold medal.

As the current world record holder in the women’s 5,000m, McGrory won the race with a time of 12:29.07 in her Paralympic Games debut. McGrory competes in both wheelchair basketball and track and field at Illinois, where she is coached by Paralympic track and field team member, Adam Bleakney.
