Hockey opens season with pair of victories

The Illinois hockey team opened its season at home with two wins against Michigan State on Friday and Saturday, winning by scores of 2-1 and 7-0, respectively.

In the first game, freshman Brad Messersmith and junior JJ Heredia scored, while DJ Kohler held the Spartans to a lone goal in the third period.

The second game contained two goals each from Daniel Cohen and Rob Deubel, and a shutout from junior goaltender Mike Burda.

In a series that featured multiple scuffles and ejections, the Illini outshot Michigan State, 84 to 40.
