Hockey wins close one in first league game

By Tony Donisch

The Illinois hockey team won their first Central States Collegiate Hockey League game against No. 12-ranked Kent State 2-0 Friday night in Ohio.

The Illini (5-0-0) stayed perfect as they out-shot the (2-1-0) Golden Flashes 36-25.

Defenseman Brad Hoelzer scored the first goal five minutes into the game, and senior Johnny Liang sent the puck into an empty net in the last minute to seal the victory.

Goaltender Mike Burda continued his scoreless streak with 25 saves in the Illini shutout, making it the third straight time he has done so this year.

The Illini play again Saturday at Kent State when they go for their third straight sweep to start the season.
