Illinois soccer outlasts Memphis in NCAA Tournament

By Cody Westerlund

It took quite some time, but the Illinois soccer team won its first round NCAA Tournament game 1-0 against the Memphis Tigers on Friday night.

Sophomore forward Jordan Hilbrands scored in the second overtime to send the Illini into the Round of 32, where they will face the winner of the Missouri-Evansville game Sunday at 1 p.m. in Columbia, Mo.

Chichi Nweke assisted on the golden goal that ended the game. On the play, Hilbrands took a feed from Nweke in the center of the field, found an opening and sent a low shot into the left corner of the goal past a diving Memphis goalkeeper. Illinois outshot Memphis 16-9 for the game. Goalie Alexandra Kapicka had three saves.
