Schultz to replace Locksley as Illinois offensive coordinator

By Wes Anderson

Illinois has hired Mike Schultz to join Ron Zook’s coaching staff as offensive coordinator, the Division of Intercollegiate Athletics announced Tuesday.

Schultz had been an offensive coordinator at TCU since 2001, and will take the position previously held by Mike Locksley, who left Illinois shortly after last season to become head coach at New Mexico.

At TCU, Schultz tutored LaDanian Tomlinson as a running backs coach and helped lead the Horned Frogs to 11 wins last season as both offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

“I am very excited to have Mike join our staff,” Zook said in a statement. “To add someone with his level of experience is a testament to the University of Illinois program. Mike is a proven coach and coordinator and will be able to lead and continue to grow this offense.”

Schultz is scheduled to speak with the media during a teleconference Tuesday afternoon.
