Men’s gymnastics defeats Penn State

The No. 3 Illinois men’s gymnastics team defeated No. 4 Penn State 345.500-339.800 at Huff Hall on Saturday night without the help of its ace, Paul Ruggeri.

In Ruggeri’s absence, freshmen Tyler Mizoguchi and Austin Phillips rose to the occasion, placing second and third, respectively, in the all-around. It was the Nittany Lions’ defending NCAA all-around champion Sandy Casey who stole the spotlight, though, as he won four out of the six events and took the all-around title for the night.
