The No. 33 Illini women’s tennis team’s eight-match winning streak came to a

halt as they fell to No. 1 Northwestern 6-1 on Saturday in Evanston, Ill.

While the Wildcats (12-2, 3-0 Big Ten) notched the doubles point with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles spots, the tandem of redshirt sophomore Leigh Finnegan

and freshman Chelcie Abajian wouldn’t back down at the No. 1 doubles but fell

8-6.

Although the match was already decided after the Illini (10-3, 2-1) dropped

four of their singles matches, junior Megan Fudge was the lone Illini standing.

The unranked Fudge defeated No. 36 Samantha Murray at the No. 2 spot, 6-4,

6-4, capturing Illinois’ only point and improving to 12-1.

Illinois will travel to face No. 72 Wisconsin on Sunday at 11 a.m.
