Illinois football to hold open tryouts

By Sean Neumann

The Illinois football team will be hosting open tryouts for students interesting in joining the team.

An informational meeting will be held at 4 p.m. on Monday in the squad room, located on the lower level of the football complex in Memorial Stadium’s northeast tower.

Players interested in trying out for the team must be enrolled full-time at the University and have passed a physical exam in the past six months. If needed, students can get a physical exam at McKinley Health Center on campus.

A University press release said students must bring their I-Card and are asked to bring proof of their NCAA Clearinghouse qualifications after high school.

“If you have any questions on the meeting or tryout, please contact Scott Yielding at 217-333-1400 or [email protected],” the press release continued.

Head coach Tim Beckman awarded four full-scholarships last season to walk-ons from 2012, including senior safety Ben Mathis, long snapper Zach Hirth, tight end Tim Russell, and junior kicker Taylor Zalewski. All four were letter-winners in 2013.
