Mike Small wins coach of the year

Illinois men’s golf head coach, Mike Small, was named the Dave Williams National Coach of the Year, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Wednesday.

The award goes to the top golf coach at every level of college golf, and is voted on by coaches across America.

Illinois set a school record of eight tournament title victories while each of Small’s top five players have won individual tournaments as well.

Small and the rest of the Illinois team dominated the Big Ten in 2014-2015. Thomas Detry was the Big Ten player of the year while Nick Hardy was the Big Ten freshman of the year.

Three more of Small’s players, Brian Campbell, Charlie Danielson, and Thomas Detry, were named second-team All Americans.
