Illinois women’s tennis team ends three-game skid

The Illinois women’s tennis team beat Florida State on Friday, 4-0, snapping its three-game losing streak.

The Illini improved their record to 4-8 while the Seminoles dropped to 8-5.

Head coach Evan Clark said that the team needed to come out with more energy in this match, and they did just that from the beginning.

Senior Louise Kwong and sophomore Ines Vias set the tone for the Illini, winning the first doubles match, 6-0. The duo beat Florida State’s Julia Mikulski and Andrea Garcia.

Senior Madie Baillon and sophomore Jaclyn Switkes also did their parts, clinching the doubles point for the Illini at the No.1 position. They beat the doubles pair of Nandini Das and Ariana Rahmanparast, 6-1.

The momentum from the doubles win carried over into singles play for the Illini, as they won all three of their matches in straight sets.

Daniela Pedraza Novak beat Rahmanparast 6-1, 6-4 at the No. 5 posiiton. On Court Six, Grace Tapak followed with a win as well. While her match was more competitive, she pulled through and won against Garcia 6-3, 6-4.

At the No.1 position, Kwong went on to clinch the victory for the Illini. She closed out a tight match against Gabriella Castaneda, winning 6-4, 7-5.

Illinois will host a doubleheader Friday against Texas Tech at 2 p.m. and Saint Louis University at 6 p.m.

Texas Tech is on a five-match winning streak with a 12-3 record.

Saint Louis is 9-6 and are winners of four-straight.

These two matches will kick off a five-game home stand for the Illini.
