Center Kofi Cockburn goes for the shot during the game against Arizona on Dec. 11. After the Illini fell to Indiana on Friday, the Illini are now at the No. 4 seed in the South Region and will be going up against No. 13 Chattanooga for the NCAA Tournament.

By Jackson Janes, Staff Writer

On Sunday, the Illini learned their NCAA Tournament fate after losing early in their conference postseason competition early: a No. 4 seed in the South Region and a trip to Pittsburgh to take on the No. 13 Chattanooga Mocs.

Illinois is making back-to-back appearances in the Big Dance for the first time since the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons, though the program has not advanced to the Sweet 16 since 2005.

After the Illini were eliminated in the Round of 32 last season by the in-state Loyola Chicago Ramblers, they will open their 2022 campaign with a meeting with the Mocs on Friday, with tipoff scheduled for 5:50 p.m.

Let’s take a look at all 17 teams in the South Region.

Note: Bryant and Wright State will meet in the First Four on Wednesday, with the winner advancing as the No. 16 seed and taking on Arizona on Friday in San Diego.
