The Chicago Bears are finalizing a deal to make the Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson their new head coach.
Johnson will take over the responsibilities previously held by Matt Eberflus — who was fired mid-season — and Thomas Brown, the interim head coach. This announcement comes the Monday after the Lions’ loss to the Washington Commanders in the NFC Divisional game on Saturday.
This season, Johnson’s offense led the league with the most points scored (564) and was one of the best offenses overall. The Lions clinched the No. 1 seed in the NFC with Johnson’s help, making him a fan favorite to be the Bears’ next head coach.
Among multiple issues this past season, Chicago struggled to move the ball down the field, ranking dead last in offensive yards (4,839) and yards per game (284.6). Now that the Bears have an offensive-minded coach to lead the way, no one is more excited than quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams showed signs of greatness in his rookie year. However, the drama surrounding the coaching staff made it difficult for him to find consistency. Williams’ potential, combined with Johnson’s creative play calling, creates new hope for next season.

Johnson helped revitalize Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s career from meteoric to leading the NFC in passing yards (4,629). There is no doubt that Johnson can set up Williams and the Bears’ franchise for success.
The new head coach will start assembling his “star-studded” coaching staff, beginning with former New Orleans Saints head coach Dennis Allen, who may become the Bears’ new defensive coordinator. One thing is for sure: All eyes will be on Chicago next season.
It is safe to say that it has been a good start to 2025 for Bears fans.
