Dylan Ennis commits to Oregon

By Alex Roux

Illinois fans received some bad news on Wednesday, as an Illini hoops target announced he will not finish his college career in Champaign.

Dylan Ennis, a 6-foot-2 graduate transfer guard from Villanova, has committed to Oregon. He was also considering Illinois and Baylor.

Illini head coach John Groce was pursuing Ennis in hopes that he could land a veteran ball-handler to take over the point guard position in 2015-16. Ennis announced his decision to transfer from Villanova in early April, citing his desire to take on the role of a primary ball-handler his senior season.

As a junior, Ennis averaged 5.1 points and 1.6 assists on a stellar 29-5 Wildcats team last season, and is eligible to play immediately next season due to the NCAA’s graduate transfer rule.

With the addition of Charlotte graduate transfer Mike Thorne, adding Ennis would have given Illinois a completely new-look and veteran-laden team in 2015-16. But with Ennis’ decision to play elsewhere and barring a potential commitment from high-profile 2015 target Marcus LoVett, the Illini point guard position will be up for grabs between junior Jaylon Tate and redshirt senior Tracy Abrams.

Alex is a junior in AHS.
