Just one day after Josh Whitman’s arrival on campus as Illinois’ new athletic director, Illini athletics has another problem to deal with.

Local media reported Friday morning that Illinois sophomore forward Leron Black was arrested Thursday at The Canopy Club in Urbana.

According to a police report released by the University, security staff flagged down a police officer during a music event going on at the club and indicated that Black had a knife in his possession. An officer stopped Black as he was walking away from the club and discovered a small folding knife on the sidewalk a few feet away in the direction Black had been walking.

Witnesses at the scene said that Black had threatened security personnel with the knife as staff members removed him and others from the club following a fight.

Black is being charged with aggravated assault, a felony and will appear in court at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
