Men’s golf to compete in Florida

By Andy Selby

The fall season for the Illinois men’s golf team is coming to a close following next weekends road trip to Orlando, Fla. for the Wolverine Invitational.

After coming off a first place finish at Illinois State University only three weeks ago, Head coach Mike Small is confident that the men can pull off a victory down south.

“We’re going to win this thing,” Small said. “We go to win every tournament, but we won one this fall. We’re playing against some northern schools now in the south. I think it’s the Big 12 North and the Big Ten and the MAC are going to put some teams together and go down and play in Florida. And we’re going to go down there and see if we can do it.”

A lot of the team’s early success can be attributed not only to the stellar play of veterans Jon Krick and Zach Barlow, but also the play of the freshman tandem of Scott Langley and Chris DeForest.

While there have been shining moments this year, the team still has work to do. With a three month lay off before the spring season starts back up, coach Small talks about the necessary things that the team needs to improve on this winter.

“Fundamentally around the greens we need to learn some more shots, but also grow some confidence in our swings and get these guys to understand what cause and effect is in their games,” Small said.
