Former football player’s case postponed

The case against former Illini football player Jody Ellis has been postponed until Jan. 22, when the defendant is required to appear for his pretrial hearing.

Ellis is charged with four counts of burglary and two counts of theft. The state has elected to schedule his trial after fellow former football player Derrick McPhearson, who faces the same charges, after the pair was found to be in possession of stolen electronics and wallets after a minor traffic accident March 2.

Ellis is considering an option to go to boot camp instead of facing trial and a prison sentence, and McPhearson plans to go to trial, said Ellis’s lawyer Ed Piraino.

“The state has not made a firm offer with Jody yet,” Piraino said. “Jody is in limbo.”
