Construction making campus hazardous

By Melissa McEwen

While I welcome the new stores and other developments that recent construction is bringing to campus, I am worried that the city of Champaign and the University have not adequately considered the interests of pedestrians. Most students walk to class and rely on sidewalks, but many construction sites have blocked off sidewalks without providing alternative paths. The cumulative effect of the many construction blockages is that walking has become hazardous in many areas, including Daniel Street, which pedestrians were forced to share with buses earlier this week after construction blocked off both sides of the street. On that day I went down Armory to avoid the construction on Daniel and found myself trapped inside a construction fence, forcing me to make a long detour. Walking to class should not be a hazard nor an exercise in navigation skills.
