Amber Moore stole the show Monday night for the Illinois women’s basketball team in a lopsided victory over Northwestern.

Though four Illini seniors were honored before the game as part of Senior Night, Moore provided the highlights with a career-high 31-point offensive explosion against the Wildcats.

Moore’s significant scoring contribution played a big role in maintaining a double-digit lead for most of the game and extending the lead to a game-high 20 points at the 15-minute mark of the second half.

The sophomore hit 10-14 from the field and 5-of-7 from beyond the 3-point line. She got into a rhythm early and started demanding the ball, sinking deep 3-pointers of varying degrees of difficulty.

Illinois head coach Jolette Law had stressed recently that she believed Moore was being too timid and unselfish on the court, and Law encouraged her to be more vocal when she finds herself open on the perimeter.

Law even stopped practice temporarily last Saturday to demonstrate how loud Moore needed to be when calling for the ball. Law then comically started yelling at the top of her lungs.

“It shocked me actually,” Moore said. “She was yelling extremely loud in practice.”

The team paused to laugh after the coaching moment, but the lesson had its desired effect when Moore started calling for the ball against Northwestern’s matchup zone.

“There are so many times where I’m like, ‘Amber, open your mouth and call for the ball,’” Law said. “(Monday) night she was calling for the ball, she was in the groove and we kept the ball on her. So I think she learned from practice.”

Moore continued her prolific 3-point shooting as an Illini, hitting her 120th career 3-point field goal Monday. She passed Allison Curtin’s mark of 114 career 3-pointers last Thursday against Minnesota, which places her fifth all-time at Illinois.

Adrienne GodBold has made her mark as one of the most valuable players in the Big Ten by providing efficient scoring off the bench.

GodBold entered Monday’s game a little later than usual after Law started four seniors, but she didn’t take long to get going.

The junior guard recorded five steals in the first half and scored a stealthy 13 points while going 4-of-5 from the field and 5-of-5 from the free-throw line.

GodBold ranks fourth in conference play in field goal percentage at 50.8 percent. But she had to remain extra focused at times Monday, when the entire football roster filed into the Assembly Hall to cheer on the Illini women.

“I know at one point, I looked and I saw Karisma (Penn) looking around,” GodBold said. “I caught myself and said, ‘We have to focus, we have to focus.’

“We saw them come in and they gave us a boost.”
